Why Early Orthodontic Assessment Matters for Children

A child’s first orthodontic assessment is often recommended from around age 7, especially if there are concerns about crowding, bite problems or jaw development.. At this stage, the adult teeth and jaws are still developing, which allows an orthodontist to identify potential crowding, bite problems or growth-related concerns early.

Early assessment does not always mean early treatment. In many cases, Dr Qureshi may recommend monitoring your child's development and starting treatment at the most appropriate time. In other cases, early intervention may help reduce the risk of some issues becoming more complex.

Signs your child may benefit from an orthodontic assessment include:

Crowded, overlapping, or crooked teeth
Gaps between teeth
Teeth that do not meet properly when biting together
An upper or lower jaw that appears to sit too far forward or too far back
Difficulty biting or chewing food
Mouth breathing or thumb sucking habits that continue beyond the early years

If you are unsure whether your child needs orthodontic treatment, a consultation with Dr Qureshi can provide a clear professional opinion and recommended next steps.

Adjustments

Your child will attend regular follow-up appointments so the braces can be adjusted and to monitor treatment progress. These visits are usually short and are an important part of keeping treatment on track.

Completion

Once the teeth have moved into the planned position, the braces will be removed and provide you with retainers. Retainers are essential because they help prevent your child’s teeth from moving to their previous positions.

Looking After Children’s Braces

Good oral hygiene is especially important during orthodontic treatment. Children with fixed braces need to brush carefully around the brackets and wires, avoid very hard or sticky foods, and attend regular dental check-ups alongside their orthodontic appointments. Dr Qureshi will explain how to care for the braces and what to do if a bracket becomes loose or a wire causes discomfort.

Children's Orthodontics: Your Questions Answered

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

Many children benefit from an orthodontic assessment between the ages of 7 and 10. This does not always mean treatment will start straight away, but it allows an orthodontist to check how the teeth and jaws are developing.

How long does children's orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment length depends on the complexity of the case. Many fixed brace treatments take around 12 to 24 months, but Dr Qureshi will give you a personalised estimate after assessing your child.

Are braces painful for children?

Having braces fitted is usually not painful. Your child may feel pressure or mild discomfort for a few days after fitting or adjustment appointments. This normally settles quickly.

Can my child still play sports with braces?

Yes. Children can usually continue playing sports with braces. For contact sports, a suitable orthodontic mouthguard may be recommended.

How much do children’s braces cost?

Children's fixed braces normally start from £1,500. During the current limited-time offer, treatment may be available from £1,000 for children under 18. The final fee depends on your child's individual treatment needs and will be explained before you decide whether to proceed. Terms apply. Finance is subject to status and terms.

Is Dr Saba Qureshi a specialist orthodontist?

Yes. Dr Saba Qureshi is a GDC-registered specialist orthodontist. She completed her Masters degree and specialist orthodontic training at Guy's Hospital, London, and now practises exclusively in orthodontics. She also has training in paediatric dentistry, making her well-suited to treating children.

Do we need a referral from our dentist?

No. You can contact Didcot Dental Studio directly to arrange a private orthodontic consultation for your child.

What happens after braces are removed?

Your child will need retainers to help keep the teeth in their new position. Retainers should be worn as directed by Dr Qureshi.
